Credit card companies that provide credit cards for people with bad credit follow a similar process. Unsecured credit cards are cards issued to individuals with good credit. Secured or prepaid credit cards are cards that are secured with a deposit made by the borrower.

Secured credit cards for people with bad credit are also called prepaid because you have to make a deposit to the bank or credit card company before you can use these new credit cards. Unlike unsecured credit cards, the amount of your credit limit on secured prepaid cards is determined by the amount of your deposit. These secured credit cards can be "reloaded" or prepaid when the deposit is gone and are excellent ways to control your spending. Secured credit cards are often the credit cards that are issued to individuals with bad, poor or no credit. They may also be given to someone as a new credit card if they've previously had no credit.

The fees and interest rates may often be higher on unsecured credit cards than what you'd see on a secured card. Much of this depends on the bank or credit card company so always shop around and research credit cards when you’re looking for a new credit card, whether you're credit is good or bad.
