Prepaid Visa or MasterCard are pre-funded reloadable credit cards. Prepaid credit cards are also referred to as stored value cards. Credit cards can be put into two categories: secured or unsecured. These reloadable cards are secured cards because you have to deposit money into an account and this money is held as "security" before they can be used as credit cards. Once the money is used up, the secured card can no longer be used until more money is deposited with the card company. This is often referred to as "recharging" the prepaid credit cards.

Prepaid credit cards are often used for consumers that are just starting off and looking for their first credit card. Because they have no prior credit experience, they have no credit, which is often equivalent to having bad credit in the eyes of a lender. Reloadable cards are a good way for a new borrower to experience having credit cards without the worry of overextending themselves.
