Visa is synonymous with credit cards. When you hear the phrase Visa cards, you know they're referring to either a Visa credit card or Visa debit card. Along with MasterCard, Visa cards have been a driving force in the credit card industry throughout the world. Visa controls the most high tech and largest consumer payments system in the world and is owned by more than 21,000 financial institutions around the world. Visa cards, however, are not offered directly by Visa but rather by the financial institutions and merchants that have a financial relationship with Visa.
