Summer 2026
The Journalism and Graphic Art & Design departments invite you to join us as we travel to one of the most vibrant cultural and historical cities in the world, London, England! Hosted by Darleen Principe (Journalism) and James Van Arsdale (Graphic Art & Design), you'll study Visual Communication and Creative Thinking as you experience the epic history and vibrant art of London town. There are world famous museums, wondrous parks and gardens, great food and tea to be had, and of course the famous pubs. See some close-by destinations in the English countryside, and if you like, head to Paris for the weekend! You'll enjoy guided tours and print workshops as you stay in the city center for four weeks with us working on creative challenges and learning about communication.

James Van Arsdale is a multidisciplinary creative and educator living and working in Santa Barbara. Van Arsdale received an MFA from the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University and a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and has a lengthy history of working in the graphic design field. He has had exhibitions of work at venues including the Torrance Museum of Art (CA), Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, University of Texas at Dallas, Brookhaven College (TX), Blue Star Art Complex (TX) and University of LaVerne (CA). He is a co-founder of the annual Off Register Art Book and Print Fair.

Darleen Principe is chair of the journalism department and faculty adviser to The Channels, SBCC鈥檚 digital student newspaper. Before she started teaching, she was a professional news writer and editor for over 10 years in Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Darleen has a B.A. in journalism and M.A. in mass communication from CSU Northridge. She also has a master鈥檚 in visual culture from the University of Westminster in London, England, where she lived for a year. Darleen is thrilled to return to London in summer 2026 as co-director of this program.

As part of the academic program, students will participate in many excursions, including: (These excursions are tentative and subject to change)
- Explore the Victoria & Albert Museum
- Visit Tate Modern
- The Design Museum (including "Wes Anderson: The Archives" special exhibition)
- Kew Gardens
- Tower of London
- Guided walking tour of East London with focus on street art and photography
- Workshop in Risograph printing
- Day trip to Margate
- OPTIONAL TOURS: Latitudes Abroad can arrange affordable optional tours to key sites of interest such as Oxford, Stonehenge, Salisbury, Windsor, Bath etc. if booked in advanced. These are optional and not mandatory and not included in the program cost
- Must be in good academic standing and in good standing with Student Conduct and Title IX
- Must be at least 18 years old on the day of departure
- Must have successfully completed at least 6 college level units
- Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 or higher
After acceptance to the program and official program-go announcement:
- You must enroll at SBCC for the summer 2026 term in order to participate in the
program
- Must submit the non-refundable deposit upon acceptance notification to confirm the
spot on the program. The spot is not confirmed until the fee has been received
- Must submit the Program Participation Agreement upon receipt within 10 days of the
acceptance notification
You must follow the steps provided in the registration letter to register for courses
on this program once registation opens for you. Course CRN numbers can not be accessed
via the SBCC course catalog.
- You must complete, sign and submit all legal documents to SBCC Study Abroad. Not
submitting the required legal documents on time may cancel you from the program.
- SBCC requires basic medical insurance, which covers illness and accidents abroad
as well as the cost of returning students to the US if needed. Student is responsible
to purchase their own insurance
- There is no major or language requirement for this program
Acceptance and participation in the program is not guaranteed until you receive officiall notification from the SBCC Study Abroad office and you make your application fee payment to the service provider.
The courses that are offered as part of the program are usually transferable to the University of California and California State University. Check with your academic advisor for possible exceptions. You must enroll in a minimum of 6 units throughout the whole program.
JOUR 250 Introduction to Visual Communication (3 Units)
Survey of the significant techniques and examples of visual communication in the mass
media, including social media and the Internet, newspapers, magazines, television,
cinema and advertising. Particular emphasis is placed on critical thinking, visual
and cultural literacy, and on the perception of visual media messages and their impact
on culture and society. Creation and analysis of images for print, Web and video.

GDP 118 Creative Thinking (3 Units)
Students learn how to develop techniques to enhance their innate creative abilities.
Specific problems are presented and students work alone and in groups to work through
the exercises and develop original and creative solutions. Creative problem-solving
techniques and ideas are explored. Helps students to better develop problem-solving
skills with a particular focus on visual art and design. The focus is on creation
of original and innovative concepts, and analyzation of how ideas are created. Students
use sketchbooks and software programs. Transfer Information: CSU Transferable, UC

All payments except the application fee but including any supplements, will be invoiced by Lattitudes Abroad to each participant at least 2 weeks prior to the payment deadline.
Latitudes Abroad, LLC will recommend round-trip airfare. Roundtrip group airport transfers in London are included in the program cost.

- London: an Oyster card granting unlimited travel on the underground, buses, trams
and regional trains in the zones 1 & 2 of London for the duration of the London section
Twin Room accommodation in University College London (UCL) dorms with shared bathroom and kitchen. Centrally located within 5-10 minute walk of multiple tube and train stations including Euston, Kings Cross, Russell Square and Warren Street. Markets, coffee shops and a hospital are within a 5 minute walk.

** We accept students on a first-come, first-serve basis and recommend that you apply as soon as possible as programs fill before their deadline. Once a program is full, we start a waiting list.
Start your application process well in advance of the application deadline. You will need to submit several required documents with your online application. Some of the documents need to be completed by school officials and other persons, which may take several days or weeks. You must have your completed required documents before you start your online application.
All required documents needed for your online application are:
1. A current photo. This should be a close-up headshot which clearly identifies you. Please do not wear
sunglasses or hats.
2. Unofficial Transcript. The transcript must show the name of your institution, your full name, all the courses you have
taken so far with the grade and your GPA. Screenshots from your phone can not be accepted
unless each image identifies your institution and your name.
3. A completed Student Conduct Release Form. This form must be completed by the school official at your current or most recent institution who is responsible for Student Conduct. If that is SBCC for you,submit this form to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs Office, Dr. Christopher Johnson in the Campus Center, Room # CC-218 or email it to flores@sbcc.edu. Be sure you complete the top part of the form and clearly identify the program you are applying for (London Summer 2026). Failure to clearly identify the program may result in a delay in processing your application and forms.
Instructions for the Student Conduct Release Form before starting your online application:
1. Download fillable PDF form and save it to your computer.
2. Complete the top part as instructed in the document and save the form again with
the changes.
3. Email the form with your information to the individual who will complete it and
request they return it to you.
4. Once the form have been returned to you, click on the Online Application link below
to start the application process.
5. Upload all required documents with your online application.
6. You will get to a screen that confirms your application and all forms have been submitted.
If you do not get to that screen, your application has not been submitted.

Please make sure you read all the instructions on how to apply before starting your
application. All information on the application will be lost when you close the site.
You will need to complete your required documents prior to starting the application.
After submission of your application it will be reviewed and forwarded to the program
director, who will reach out to you for an interview. Interviews may be held in person
or Zoom if not located in Santa Barbara.
You will be notified of your acceptance into the program in writing via email from
the Study Abroad office. You are not officially confirmed on the program until you
receive the notification, make the non-refundable $450 deposit directly to Latitudes
Abroad via their Zelle and complete the Program Participation Agreement, which will
be sent with the acceptance notification.
Once you have officially been accepted to the program, you will need to register online with Latitudes Abroad LLC and make the payment of the application fee. The non-refundable $450 deposit will secure your spot in the program. We advise you to make sure you have the amount of the deposit set aside at the time you apply to the program.
Please review the cancelation policy below.
Subsequent program payments must be made directly to Latitudes Abroad. Failure to
make any payment when due will automatically cancel you from the program one week
after the payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by
Latitudes Abroad. Tuition and related fees are paid to SBCC upon registering for the courses.

Any individual cancellation must be made in writing to Latitudes Abroad LLC and is effective the date of the receipt by Latitudes Abroad LLC. In addition, students must e-mail the SBCC Study Abroad office at nwalther@pipeline.sbcc.edu to confirm their withdrawal
Cancellation/ Withdrawal from the program must be made in writing to SBCC and Latitudes Abroad LLC and is effective the date of the receipt. The following cancellation fees apply:
Cancel on or before March 18, 2026 = $450
Cancel after March 18 and before April 17, 2026 = $1350
Cancel on or after April 17 = No refund
The above referenced cancellation fees are in addition to any cancellation fees for the group airfare (estimated $100 - $200).
- Should Latitudes Abroad, LLC and SBCC cancel the program due to lack of enrollment or safety concerns on March 18, 2026 then all participants at that time shall receive a full refund of their program costs minus any non-recoverable costs. This is in addition to any airline cancellation fees.
- If the program has already departed, assemble the students and faculty in a safe location and upon consultation and agreement with SBCC, Latitudes Abroad, LLC will coordinate arrangements to fly the students and faculty back to the USA. In this case, students will receive a pro-rated refund of all fees paid to Latitudes Abroad, LLC for the proportion of the program not completed minus any non-recoverable costs, including any costs incurred in coordinating the flights back to the USA.

The UK has implemented a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) which will be required beginning January 8, 2025, for all U.S. citizens (and travelers from several other countries). The application can be found or on the .
An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA):
- May take up to three working days to process.
- Costs 拢10 ($12.75).
- Is required for travelers of all ages.
- Is valid for two years or the remaining period of validity on a passport, whichever
is shorter; and
- Does not require travel details.
Traveling in the Schengen area prior to or after the program dates: You can not stay more than 90 days in the Schengen area. If you plan on traveling prior to the start date of the program, or after the program ends, you can not stay in the Schengen area.
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
The UK launched an ETA system, which is being rolled out incrementally and aimed at
visitors who do not need a visa for short stays in the UK, or those who do not already
have a UK immigration status prior to traveling. More information on the ETA program
is available at . Effective February 2026, the ETA will be mandatory. Travellers form 85 countries
who do not need a visa, including those from the USA, Canada and Australia, will need
to apply for the digital permit f as of February 25, 2026. This includes all U.S.
citizens transiting the UK or traveling to the UK for tourism, family visits, business
meetings, conferences, or short-term study for 6 months or less.
Please review the UK government page regarding the ETA and travel visa. It is your responsibility to apply for your ETA a minimum of 3 days in advance. Please find additional information at the link below.
